PROBLEM STATEMENTS

S.No. Problem Statement Company
Obesity is on the rise, with increase in tech- enabled food deliveries, social media related junk food exposures, etc. Find a simple and intelligent food solution to help the youth of our country adhere to traditional home based food
Large-scale production in Industries is a tedious process that involves a series of precautionary steps with bioreactors like prevention of microbial contamination. Therefore, several antibiotics are used along with the media to avoid the growth of unwanted pathogens. Once fermentation is over, the effluents from the reactors are screened for the antibiotics like fluoroquinolones, sulfonamides, macrolides, and trimethoprim before letting out into the environment. If left untreated, this could lead to contaminated food and water, alterations in the human microbiome, absorption by plants, unwanted development of bacterial resistance, and so on. Ozonisation and Advanced Oxidation Processes are the most common treatment methods. Come up with chemical-free treatment methods to trap these antibiotics in the effluents of a large-scale fermenter.
Covid19 pandemic wave 2 was terrible in our country but has given rise to at home ICUs. Find a way to improve the healthcare system of our country by identifying and solving more such critical care provisions remotely and affordably.
The rate of diagnosis for Lactose Intolerance among young individuals has been steadily rising in the 21st century. Lactase is an essential enzyme required to break down lactose in dairy products to make it fit for consumption for people with this condition. However, production of lactase has been restricted to large enterprises due to the high processing costs involved in quality enhancement. Therefore, come up with an idea to produce high quality lactase to be used in a cost-effective manner.
Knee pains are a certainty for all age groups and yet, it has not been fully solved. Find one gap in the knee pain management industry and offer a solution.
Citric acid is an important multifunctional organic acid with a broad range of versatile uses in household and industrial applications that has been produced industrially since the beginning of 20th century. The various applications of citric acid can be found in detergent and cleaning products, cosmetics and toiletries, etc. Global production has now reached 1.4 million tons whereas there is an annual growth of 3.5-4.0% in demand for citric acid. Come up with a novel idea to set up your own factory with greater efficiency and increased productivity of citric acid.
As the pandemic continues raging throughout the whole world, there is a huge influx of drugs being researched to see if they can be of any help to patients suffering from Covid-19. However there has been a huge delay in drug testing and approval due to the slow pacing of drug testing and screening. Hence come up with a mechanism for a faster and cost effective yet accurate model for drug screenings.
Longevity of human anatomy is the next big thing in Silicon Valley. Let's bring it to India-the land of spices, ayurveda and yoga. Propose a solution towards longevity of one or many systems of the human body and hack a way to ensure human beings live for 700 years!
As the stigma around mental health is slowly fading away as society slowly discusses these issues, people are getting diagnosed with mental health conditions such as clinical depression even though many aren’t affected by the covid-19 pandemic. Antidepressant drugs such as Zoloft and its generic counterparts have been added to the Food and Drug Administration’s list of drugs currently experiencing shortages. The pandemic has either halted or decreased the pace of manufacture and supply of many important pharmaceutical drugs. Propose a solution to produce antidepressants at a faster pace with the ability to control the dosage of drugs produced.
Electronic waste (E-waste) is one of the fastest growing pollution problems worldwide. It possesses a variety of toxic substances which can contaminate and pollute the environment and threaten human health if not managed, treated or disposed of properly. Processes such as dismantling components, Wet chemical processing, and incineration are used to dispose of the waste and result in direct exposure and inhalation of harmful chemicals. Legislation and recycling channels for such waste are organised in many countries, but currently only 20% is recycled in a certified process. Suggest a mechanism that helps people for safe disposal of electronic waste without disturbing the balance in the environment.
Filtration is the appropriate sterilization technique when it comes to media with heat-labile substances. Depth Filters are preferred to membrane filters as they are less clogging, more efficient, and cost-effective. These are columns packed with fibrous materials like glass wool, asbestos pads, yarn wool, etc. with non uniform pore sizes. The efficiency of these filters was also reported not to be 100% in separating the microorganisms, and sometimes channels get formed through which microbes easily escape. They are also not recyclable, unlike membrane filters. Come up with a more significant fibrous material for these filters that are recyclable and with uniform pore sizes along with a new design, if necessary, keeping in mind the cost factor for scaling-up.
600 Million babies lose their lives in rural areas, due to lack of healthcare facilities to birthing mothers. Propose a solution and business model to reach these mothers and ensure no baby dies.
While travelling via aircrafts passengers often face a form of discomfort referred to as airplane ear (ear barotrauma). It refers to the stress on your eardrum that occurs when the air pressure in your middle ear and the air pressure in the environment are out of balance. On an average it has been estimated that 10% of adults and 22% of children might have changes to the ear drum after a flight, although perforation is rare. One may endure airplane ear when on an airplane that's climbing after take off or descending for landing. Considering, conventional use of earplugs isn’t quite efficient in relieving pain or discomfort, suggest a more efficient method of tackling this.
With the ever increasing demand for energy by consumers, a sustainable, consistent and hence viable source of energy is the need of the hour. A common hindrance with current fuel alternatives is that it poses several environmental constraints and is expendable in the long run. Microbial oils seem to be a satisfactory alternative with respect to the current impediments faced due to non- renewable fossil fuels. Hence, microbial oils play a monumental role in paving the way for production of biofuels. There is a common problem of biomass recovery from the fermenter and the subsequent extraction of the oil. Hence, suggest means to increase yield of production and hence to make the mechanism more cost effective.
Biomedical Waste, (BMW) or bio wastes are those potential hazardous waste materials, consisting of solids, liquids, sharps, and laboratory waste. Biomedical waste differs from other types of hazardous waste, such as industrial waste, in major sources of biomedical wastes is hospitals and nursing homes. Approximately 75-90% of the biomedical waste is non-hazardous and as harmless as any other Municipal waste. The rest 10- 25%, though mixed with non-hazardous waste, can be injurious to humans or animals and deleterious to the environment. Given the current situation of the covid pandemic. Hospitals have become a major site of production of biohazardous waste, namely biomedical waste. Suggest a method of disposal of such waste given that it is safe and does not pose any environmental constraints.
Food processing industries play a major role in the growth and development of a country. In India ,The industry engages approximately 1.93 mn people in around 39,748 registered units with fixed capital of $32.75 bn and aggregate output of around $158.69 bn. One of the major problems faced by the industry is that it is not able to provide the required nutritional fulfillment, which causes deficiencies of different sorts in the long run. Choose a specific food processing industry of your choice and specify the problem with respect to the industry that is being addressed and come up with a solution, especially on the grounds of battling nutritional deficiencies.
